his communication withHills corps shortened; so long as the pontoons were at LaCapellette there were more than twelve miles between the twosections of the army, and for every mile that the main bodyadvanced southward, the longer would be the detour to be madeacross the bridge. Wellington had intended to spend the 8th in marching againstToulouse, along the high road between Garonne and Ers, and tofight upon the 9th. No bridgewas saved till that of Croix dOrade, which was captured by abold stroke of Vivian and the 18th Hussars. Vial had tworegiments in position—the 5th and 22nd Chasseurs—and hadmade preparations for destroying the bridge and retiring atleisure, but was charged unexpectedly by Vivian, who caughtthe 22nd unawares, broke it, and chased it across the bridge—despite of a flanking fire from dismounted men of the 5thChasseurs on the other side of the water. Vivian was disabledby a carbine-shot in the arm just as he gave the order to charge—but must surely be given the credit for this success, tho
