D CHILD, WITH SCENES FROMTHE LIVES OF THE SAINTS (National Gallery) In the centre is seated the Virgin holding before her on her lap theChrist, who blesses in the Greek manner. The Virgin is placed in amandorla. On either side are : 1. The Nativity. 2. St. John the Evangelist liberated by Angels from the caldron of boiling oil. 3. The Martyrdom of St. Catherine and her Burial on Mount Sinai. 4. St. Nicholas exhorting the Sailors to throw overboard a vase of oil given to them by the Devil. 5. St. John raising Drusiana. 6. St. Benedict, haunted by the recollection of a beautiful woman he had seen in Rome, plunging himself into a thicket ofbriars and nettles to mortify the flesh. 7. St. Nicholas preventing the execution ot three innocent men. 8. St. Margaret swallowed and disgorged again by the Dragon, unhurt. The picture bears the signature, in Latin, of the artist: Margaritoneof Arezzo made me. Painted in tempera on linen affixed to wood. 2 ft. 9 in. h. x 5 ft. 9 in. w.(0-839 x 1-753)-

The thing is scarce a INTRO-work of art at all, but rather sumptuous craftsmanship— DUCTIONthe artist essays to state little that he has sensed throughhis own vision. Yet Margaritone was one of the mostdistinguished of Tuscan painters of his age, and one of theearliest painters of Italy. Born about 1240, and dying in 1302, Cimabuewas for long acclaimed the father of modern painting;and a famous altar-piece, said to have been painted by thisFlorentine, and known as the Rucellai Madonna, at S. MariaNovella in Florence, was long held to have been borne inprocession through Florence amidst public rejoicing ; butresearch has proved that, so far from this altar-piece beingby Cimabue, it was painted by a painter of Siena, oneDuccio, and that Cimabue worked i
