In the countiesof Buckingham and Bedford, and in some parts of Devonshire, the lace box isoften carried from house to house still, and at the country inns and hotels itoften makes its appearance at the end of a meal ; the waiter carrying roundthe wares, or allowing the women, who frequently make as well as sell the lace,admittance to the room. This custom is also permitted in some parts of Belgium. At Spa the system ofcolporteurs, which dates back to remote times in Greek history, still survives, andearly travellers in the country make frequent mention of lace purchasing intheir diaries.
