The decorationof the ancientchair or throne ofthe bishop, whichstill retains its))lace in the apseof San Ambrogio,is perhaps one ofthe oldest exam-ples of Lombardsculpture remain-ing. (Fig. 122.)The throne is arude structurebnilt of coursedstonework, andraised above thej)aveinent by twohigh steps. Theseat is enclosedon the sides bytwo upright slabsof marble, of which the front faces are ornamented with a guillochc, and whichbear each a couchant lion of the conventional Lombard type. Thethrone was originally Hanked, according to the custom of the earlybasilicas, by a lower range of seats for the clergy, running aroundthe curve of the apse ; but these were replaced, ))robably between thetwelfth and fourteenth centuries, by the present range of canopiedwooden stalls.
