Text Appearing Before Image:
Fig. 436. Siena. Palazzo Pubblico. CIVIL ARCHITECTURE 283 internecine strife appears in the aspect of their buildings, both publicand private. The Palazzo Pubblico, which answers to the two Florentine palacesI have just noticed, is one of the most characteristic and Paiazzobeautiful buildings in Italy. It was begun in 1287, eleven ^ubbuco.years before the Palazzo Vecchio at Florence. Text Appearing After Image:
Italy, a from the rigidity ofthe usual cubicalmass. In this in-stance the monotonyof the front, whichis about two hundredfeet long, is relievedby the superior ele-vation of the centre, which has a fourthstory above the bat-tlements of the maincornice, with twosmall belfry turretsat the angles. Thetreatment of thefront is otherwise ofthe same characterwith the private pal-aces of Siena whichI have before de-scribed. Like them,it is of brick, withthe segmental archesof the first story, under pointed bear-ing-arches v/ith solidheads, and the two upper stories of broad three-light windows. It isprobable that the third story originally existed only in the centralportion of the building, — the arched corbel-table of the wings indi-cating the position of the original main cornice.
