Its plan is a long Latin cross, the whole lengthbeing nearly two hundred and forty feet, with a breadth across thetransept of one hundred feet. The nave has the breadth of the naveof the lower church, and there are no aisles, the walls of the navebeing carried on the massive arcades of the nave below. The nave isin four square bays, the transept in three, with a polygonal apseopening from the middle bay over the round apse below, and thevaulting is uniform throughout, the bays being separated by highpointed arches springing, like the vaulting ribs, from slender groupedshafts, engaged on the nave walls and rising from the pavement.The vaults are highly pointed, with unusually large chamfered ribswithout mouldings. Their thrust is resisted on the nave walls byheavy round buttresses like turrets, rising from the piers of thelower church to the full height of the nave wall, and by low archedHying buttresses connect
