otiveof two birds back to back.Each arch encloses adeeply splayed panel, inthe upper portion of whichis a long round-archedwindow with splayedjambs and heavy rollmouldings. Over the ar-cade is a rich belt onwhich is a fine eaves gal-lery of the usual form,but of greater than theusual size. The wall is finished with a very richly decorated cornice.The whole work is of stone. The choir of San Abbondio at Como, which has in exterior designs Abbon- bttlc relation to the remainder of the church, is interest-dio. Como jj^jy jj^ several respects. Issuing from between the two talltowers which terminate the inner aisles, its plan consists, as will berememlxred, of two square groined bays and a semicircular apse ofnearly (Mpial height. A thin decorated string-course divides the wallat mid-height into two stages, and slender engaged shafts, with base Tlu (latf is doubtless tli.it of the rfbuildiiij; of the church, whose orij^^inul founda-tion goes back to the ninth century.
