Mr. Davies was born in May, 1861, in Wales,son of William Davies, a stationary engineer,who died in December, 1899, and of Mariah(Jenkins) Davies, who passed away in 1912.Lewis J. Davies received his education in thenational schools of the British Empire. Hisschool days over, he entered the mines andwas employed in various positions in thisindustry until he was twenty-two years ofage. At this time, in 1883, he migrated tothe United States, located in Luzerne County,and obtained a position with the Lehigh &Wilkes-Barre Coal Company, the firm thathad since held his allegiance. His abilityand loyalty brought him steady promotion

So well did he perform the dutiesof this position that further advancementcame to him in 190S. when he was madesuperintendent. In this important office heremained until his retirement in August, 1929.although having served as superintendent ofvarious collieries owned by the Lehigh &Wilkes-Barre Coal Company. Mr. Davies be-lieves in the principles of the Republicanparty and is ever loyal to the issues andcandidates of this political organization. Heevidences a deep interest in other organiza-tions and movements which contribute to theupbuilding of Luzerne County, and is a de-vout member of the Presbyterian Church. Le%vis J. Davies married, in 1S90, PhoebeLloyd, native of Wales, and a daughter ofWilliam Lloyd. Mrs. Davies died in March,1923. There was one child to this marriage,Gladys L. Mr. Davies resides at No. 124Christian Street, Nant
