But oh, how lonely is that out-of-the-way region, peopled only by thelumbermen and hill billies, as therural population is characterized bythe steamboat men. I gazed on thelock-keepers house, provided by thegovernment, perched high on a swell-ing hill above the river, and wonder-ed how he managed to while away hisleisure hours. You see, it is his duty to open thelocks twice a day and see that theyare in working order, whether any boatpasses or not, and otherwise he hasnothing to do. But there are plentyof buffalo perch in the river, and dur-ing the winter large flocks of wildgeese and ducks, so that aside fromthe solitude of his surroundings, hissituation is not an unpleasant one.
