f the most beautiful state build-ings in America. The cost, however, owing in part to changesin the plans, has been about $4,000,000, and the furnitureand general equipment about $9,000,000 more. This lattersum was such an extraordinary expenditure that investiga-tions were made which revealed extensive and systematicfraud deserving no other name than robbery. The legalprosecutions lasted so long that several of the men chargedwith taking part in the frauds died before conviction. TheState recovered some of the money, and two or three of thedefrauders were imprisoned. Election of Governor Pattison. — After the election ofGovernor Curtin in i860, Pennsylvania remained steadily ^ It measures 486 feet from north to south, and 470 feet from east to west.The height from the ground to the top of Penns statue is 548 feet. The build-ing loses greatly in effect from the fact that owing to its situation it is impossibleto get a complete view of it at any distance. See picture facing page 284.
