Brockenhurst : Queens Bower Oak NEW FOREST HUNDRED BROCKENHURST (Brookley) his kinsman to hold as his grandfatherEdward Vunithingi had held, together with minls-terium suum in the New Forest. Henry II whenDuke of Normandy granted Brockenhurst to WilliamSpileman as it had been held by his grandfatherEdward Vunithingi and his brother Hugh and AlvricParvus. King Stephen confirmed this charter, as didHenry II also when he became king.12 In 1212William Spileman was still holding lands in Hamp-shire (including Brockenhurst) by the serjeanty offinding litter for the kings bed and forage for hishorse when he came to hunt at Brockenhurst, and thiswas probably the ministerium before mentioned.13In the reign of Henry III William Spileman, pro-bably a son of the first William, was holding 1carucate of land in Brockenhurst by the serjeanty ofserving the king eleven days in England in time ofwar.14 He died in or before 1232 15 and wassucceeded by a son William, who survived him onlysix years, leavi
