to the abbey in 1194by Godfrey de Lucy, Bishop of Winchester,1 and inthe early part of the 1 3 th century the abbot and con-vent presented to the living, which was apparently atthat time a rectory.130 In 1233, however, they grantedthe church to Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester,together with its chapel of Basingstoke.1 The bishopmade both churches part of the endowment of thenewly-founded priory of Selborne, and theirappropriation to the priory was confirmed bythe pope in 1233-4. A joint vicarage wasendowed in them shortly afterwards, and thearrangements for service in Basing and Basingstokehad the effect of increasing the importance of thelatter at the expense of the former.134 By the end ofthe 14th century the vicarage was known as thevicarage of Basingstoke,5 and Basing sank into the y.C.H. BASINGSTOKE HUNDRED position of a dependent chapelty. Its advowsonconsequently was identical with that of Basingstoke36and passed with it into the hands of the Master andFellows of Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1864 theliving was separated from Basingstoke and declared avicarage,7 but the presentation is still in thesame hands. A free chapel of St. Michael, described in 1 349 as the chapel of the Old Castle of Basing, was grantedby John de Port, grandson of the Hugh de Port whowas lord of Basing in 1086, to Sherborne Priory.8The priors apparently presented till the suppression otthe priory in 1414, though the advowson still appearsamong the possessions of the descendants of Johnde Port.9 In 1349 the king presented to thechapel, which was in his gift while he held thetemporalities of the priory of Sherborne.140 Afterthe suppression of the priory, the descendants of thePorts seem to have regained possession of the chapel,which was treated as an appurtenance of the manordown to the 17th c
