Text Appearing Before Image:
led circles in thehead, and a trefoiled semicircle over. The secondwindow is of late 15th-century date, with threecinquefoiled lights under a square head. The thirdwindow belongs to the date of the 14th centurylengthening, and the west window is a plain 13th-century lancet reinserted here at that time. The south doorway, which is between the firstand second windows of the aisle, has jambs of twoorders with engaged shafts without bases, but havingfoliate capitals, and a pointed arch of two orders, theinner being continued from the jambs, while the outeris enriched with horizontal zigzag ornament, of late1 2th-century type. The wall thins at the springingand the extrados of the arch is exposed ; there is nolabel, and the whole is evidently re-used material. The west doorway is contemporary with thewestern extension of the nave and aisles, and hasdouble chamfered jambs and a two-centred arch. The wooden tower is in three stages with anoctagonal spire, the whole being covered with oak 322
Text Appearing After Image:
PASTROW HUNDRED HURSTBOURNETARRANT shingles. The timbers supporting this tower springfrom the floor at the west end of the nave, and thestaircase to the belfry is also inside and is constructedentirely of wood. All the walls of the church are of flint and stone, strengthened with modern brick buttresses at theends of the south aisle and the north-west corner ofthe north aisle and with two stone buttresses partlyold at the west end of the nave. The porch iswood, plastered over at a later date ; it is probably ofthe 15 th century, and brought to its presentcondition about a century ago. It has a slated roof, while all the other roofs are leaded, and there aremodern gable crosses on the chancel and nave. The roof of the chancel is of modern woodworkof low pitch. That of the nave has heavy tie-beamsand moulded ridge and purlins, and appears to beold ; it is of very flat pitch. The aisles have modernlean-to roofs. The font is of 13th-centurydate and has a plain circularbowl resting on a stem
