Ashmansworth Church : Nave looking East EVINGAR HUNDRED BURGHCLERE Edward I confirmed John, BishopJDrOfVSON of Winchester in possession of theadvowson of the church of Baughurstin 1284, and the patronage of the living belongs tothe bishopric at the present day. Dr. John Storey, LL.D., had some connexion withthe church in the 16th century, since he is oncementioned M as presenting during Bishop Gardinerstenure of the see (1531-55). From very early days the church paid the hospitalof St. Cross a pension of 5/., which is first referred toin a Papal Bull of 1187, and Baughurst is includedin a royal charter of 1189, confirming the hospitalin possession of several churches. A certain pension was deducted from the value ofBaughurst Church in the 16th century, and the rectorpays the pension at the present day.** The Primitive Methodists and the Baptists havechapels in the parish.
