BASINGSTOKE HUNDRED BASING orOLD BASING the sort, while another room north of the great hallshows remains of two large fireplaces set against therampart, and was evidently a second kitchen. Thehall itself was a fine room measuring some 60 ft. by25 ft., with screens at the north end and a north-east porch, and a shallow bay window at the south-east ; at the north end beyond the screens a broadflight of steps leads down to a cellar beneath the hall,formerly covered with a brick vault and lighted bytwo small windows on east and west ; on either sideof the entrance to the cellar are rooms in themediaeval position of buttery and pantry, that towardthe east having a bay window looking into theprincipal court. The block at the south of the hall, already notedas that which probably contained the chief living-rooms, seems from its construction of flint and stoneinstead of brick to be of an earlier date than the 16thcentury, and other work to the south-west, formingpart of the walls of a cellar
