CHUTELEY HUNDRED WOOTTONST. LAWRENCE WOOTTON ST. LAWRENCE Wudutune, Wudctone (x cent.) ; Odetune (xiCent.) ; Wutton, Wotton (xiii cent.) ; LaurenceWotton (xvi cent.). The parish of Wootton St. Lawrence covers a longstrip of land stretching from Tadley and Baughurstin the north to Deane and Kempshott in the south :it contains 4,405 acres, of which 2,911! acres arearable land, 1,070^ acres are permanent grass and405 acres woodland.1 The woods in the parish werealways very valuable and extensive. They suppliedWilliam of Wykeham with timber when he was re-constructing his cathedral nave: in 1392 no fewerthan ninety-one cartloads were sent from Manydown,and wood was again supplied in 1398 for the worksof the cathedral.2 In 1459 three huge oaks weresent to Winchester for the roof of the great hall of thepriory, which now forms the main part of the deanery,and may still be seen in the upper rooms into whichthe roof was afterwards divided.3 The village of Wootton St. Lawrence is close tothe e
