; the abacus ofthe west pillar is octagonal, but the other is half-octagonal to the west and square to the east, withcarved heads set in foliage at the angles ; this is doneto take the square-edged arch on the east. Thetwo western arches are of two hollow-chamferedorders and are two-centred ; the inner order in thewest respond springs from a corbel of similar detail tothe capitals, resting on a human head. On each side of it aretwo moulded brackets of 15th-century date; thelower pair, which are 6 ft. 3 in. above the floor, aresemi-octagonal in plan and doubtless carried images;the others are 4 ft. 6 in. higher, and are larger ; theyprobably carried the timbers of an extension of therood loft across the aisle. The widening and cuttingback of the eastern arches of the arcades is doubtlessdue to the same thing. S§3 l5ctfOUKYLATE. ijcEn GHZD MOPCHN 4O4 Goodworth Clatford Church : Nave looking North-east
