The first mention of a church inJDFOrVSON Wolverton is in 1286 in the inquisi-tion taken on the death of ReginaldFitz Peter.74 The advowson has throughout followedthe descent of the manor.75 By order in council(2 July 1880) Wolverton rectory was united with therectory of Ewhurst.76 Sir George Browne by will datedCHARITIES 11 April 1685 devised four smallhouses and parcels of land in trust for the poor. The trust estate now consists of cottages and landcontaining about 15 acres, producing yearly about ^20. MARY BOURNE FREEFOLK WHITCHURCH HIGHCLERE EAST WOODHAY The above list represents the extent of the hundred in 183 1. 2 At the time of the Domesday Survey 3 the hundred of Evingar comprisedWhitchurch, Freefolk, Hurstbourne Priors4 and Clere,5 and was assessed at78 A hides,6 whereas in the time of King Edward the Confessor it had beenassessed at 86 hides. In the 13th century the hundred included, besides, Ecchinswell inKingsclere, Ashmansworth, East Woodhay7 and Newtown,8 making itsextent almost identical withthat of 1831.
