BASINGSTOKE HUNDRED preted his trust to mean that the Brocas estates shouldcome to the young Thomas as male heir of the juniorbranch, and this when the grandfather died was nodoubt his desire.154 In 1664 this Thomas appears inthe neighbourhood of Beaurepaire, and there is anamusing letter extant from Sir William Gardiner toJohn Thorner complaining of his father-in-law andguardian Richard Johnson, who is already receivingrents at Beaurepaire, and who on the strength of hisguardianship sets up a handsome carriage with twofine black horses.155 Finally in 1678 a compromisewas effected.156 Thomas Brocas consented to give^1,550 for the relinquishment of the Gardiner claimson the freehold estates of Beaurepaire, Cranes,Bramley, Stratfieldsaye, Stratfield Mortimer, Pamber,Basingstoke, Monk Sherborne, Sherborne Coudray,Sherborne St. John and Basing, while he himself re-linquished his claim on the Roche Court estates.
