7. Ibid., ii, 1180. ■ In the Comptes for 1687 and other years there are constant entries of paymentfor the transportation of trees, fruit trees, shrubs and flowers of every sort. These werecarted from places as far distant as Arras. The parterres must have been beautiful, but asall the trees for the alleys, bosquets, quincunxes and cut work were imported and plantedin a naturally bad soil, they must have presented a dismal appearance till the latter partof the seventeenth century. Saint-Simon says, Les Pares et les avenues tous en plants nepeuvent venir. The views of the French engravers of the time were proleptic. Thus in1683 Le Blond had already made engravings of the grand Orangery of Versailles, for whichhe received 850 francs ( Comptes, ii, 356), though the building was not completed tillfour years later.
