are the borders of inland seas andlakes, rivers and ponds, swamps and ditches, stubble fieldsand others. In the latter they feed in the day-time, andtowards evening repair to the open sands, where they roostduring the night after bathing and drinking. In Yorkshire, these birds frequent the Wolds in immenseflocks, and seem to prefer those higher grounds to othersthat are lower and more marshy. They have been met withalso in other places, as at Sheffield, York, and Killingbeck, near Leeds. In Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, this speciesalso occurs by the River Severn. In Northamptonshire it isa common visitor, as I am informed by the Hon. T. L. Powys;so it also used to be in Cambridgeshire, in the fens, whenfens still existed, as recorded by the Rev. Leonard Jenyns. In Norfolk, the species is pretty abundant in autumn, winter, and spring: it also occurs in Lincolnshire. In Scotland, it breeds in Sutherlandshire, on Loch Shin,Loch Naver, Loch Laigal, and several other of the lakes; as 4

A few are said to have nestsevery year about Tunbiggin Tarn, near Orton, in Westmoreland, others in Cumberland. The species is also common in Wales and in Ireland, as awinter visitant. In Orkney, it has been observed occasionallyduring the early part of the winter, but its visits are veryuncertain. In September and October they wend their way southwards. The Bean Goose has been kept on the ornamental water inSt. James Park, London, and lias hatched its young there. It is very readily tamed if the eggs are procured, and youngbirds thus obtained for early domestication. The like indeedis the case with older birds. One was obtained by Mr. GeorgeJohnson, of Melton Ross, Lincolnshire, in 1851, of which, though an old bird and procured with the gun. he wrote meword, he is at this time so tame that he will eat out of myhand, and come any time at call, and is in every way moredomesticated
