r-lag Goose breeds in the southern parts of Norwayand Sweden, and visits Iceland. It occurs also, but notcommonly, in France, Switzerland, and Holland, and is saidto be more plentiful in Germany, in Prussia, Pomerania,Saxony, and Silesia. In Asia, it is reported to be found in Persia, China, andJapan, and along the southern shores of the Caspian Sea,and the Dead Sea. In Africa also it is seen in the northernand north-western parts. k \V

GREY-LAG GOOSE. 113 la Yorkshire, one was killed near Doncasfcer, in the springof 1843, and others are said by Mr. Allis, to have been knownat Walton Hall, and near Barnsley, York, and Sheffield. It occurs, but not very commonly, in Lincolnshire; so theRev. R. P. Alington tells me. In Norfolk it is said to haveoccurred formerly, and to do so still, though rarely. This atleast is the account given by Messrs. John Henry Gurneyand William Richard Fisher, but Messrs. C. J. and JamesPaget. say that it is very common. The former statement, Iincline to think, is the correct one; one was shot at BreydonWater, near Yarmouth, in April, 1849. Specimens have been,and are obtained, from time to time, in Northumberland,Durham, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Devonshire, and Cornwall,near Falmouth, but only occasionally, in the spring andautumn, according to W.
