, which are black. Iris,dark brown, the eyelids dark grey. Head, crown, neck onthe back, and nape, greyish brown, the former colour disposedin lines, giving a furrowed appearance; neck in front, chin,and throat, dull white; breast, dull greyish white, withdeeper shades of the same colour across. Back above brownwith a slight tinge of grey, and each feather edged withwhite or greyish white; on the lower part dark greyishbrown. The wings have the second quill feather the longest; theyreach, when closed, beyond the end of the tail. Greater andlesser wing coverts, greyish brown, tipped and edged withwhite; primaries, greyish black; secondaries and tertiaries,greyish brown, edged and tipped with white. Upper andunder tail coverts, white. Legs and toes, orange red; claws,black; webs, orange red. This colour varies in depthaccording to the age of the bird. The female is smaller. The young are of a paler grey. In some of these birds there are a few white feathersaround the base of the bill. 4

125 PINK-FOOTED GOOSE. Anser brachyrhynchus, Baillon. phcemcopus, Bartlett. Anser—A Goose. Brachyrhynchus. Brachiis—Short. Rhynchos—A bill. In the year 1833, M. Baillon, the eminent naturalist ofAbbeville, described the present as a new species, under thename which he then assigned to it. It appears, however,according to the statement of Meyer, that M. Temminck hasasserted that it had been previously observed in Holland, inthe winters of 1829 and 1830, as also subsequently in 1838.Mr. Bartlett was the first to notice it in this country, andunaware that it had been before discovered, as noticedabove, gave as its specific name that which has hence becomea synonym. These Geese occur in Europe, Asia, and America, and incold weather some cross over to the northern parts of Africa.In the first-named continent they have been observed in France,Italy, Hungary, and Turkey, and frequent, for the purposeof breeding, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and theHebrides.
