olour, and become full-fledged in a month or five weeks.When a year old the bill is dark horn-colour, the base palebrown; iris, dark brown, a dark spot before the eye. Head,crown, neck, and nape, white, streaked with dusky brown;chin and throat, white; breast, white, mottled with duskybrown; back, greyish brown, the shaft of each feather deepbrown, and the tips and edges of the feathers greyish white. . Greater and lesser wing coverts, greyish brown, margined ■with yellowish grey or white; the shafts deep brown; primaries, blackish brown; secondaries, blackish brown, with narrowgreyish yellow tips; greater and lesser under wing coverts,white. The tail has a blackish brown bar at the end, edgedwith white, the middle feathers varied with most of the former,and the outer ones with most of the latter colour; uppertail coverts, white; under tail coverts, white, mottled withdusky brown. In America, in Greenland, Baffins Bay, Labrador,and as far south as Florida. In Asia, in the vicinity of theCaspian Sea. It is with us a not uncommon though not numerousspecies; seen throughout the year on the shores of the island,but for the most part singly or in pairs. They breed abundantly in the Orkney and Shetland Islands,also on the Bass Rock, in the Firth of Forth, and one ortwo other stations on the Scottish coast, and the northernislands of the same; so to on Lundy Island and Steep Holme,in the Bristol Channel; Souliskerry in the Orkneys; and inShetland; as also, according to Mr. Yarrell, on the low landsof th
