hite. The tail, of twelve pointed feathers, is dusky greyishor brownish black, edged with very pale ferruginous or rufous;it is of a wedge shape; upper tail coverts, brown, edged withbuff; under tail coverts, white, Legs and toes, dark greenishor greyish brown; claws, black. The female is larger than the male, and her colours notso bright. The young birds want the brilliant green and purple 24 JACK SNIPE. reflections. Head on the crown, neck on the back and nape,yellowish ash-colour, with dark spots and green yellow edgesto the feathers: front of the neck and throat, buff-colour,finely marked with black; breast, white; back, yellowishash-colour, with a black mark on the larger feathers betweenthe light edges and the central colouring. Greater and lesserwing coverts, yellowish ash-colour, with black spots, andgreenish yellow edges; tertiaries, yellowish ash-colour, withblack spots and greenish yellow edges to the inner webs, andrufous edges to the outer webs; upper tail coverts, white.

25 SABINES SNIPE. Scohpax Sabini, Fleming. Selby. Jknyns. Scolopax—A Woodcock, or Snipe. Sabini—Of Sabine. The late Nicholas Aylworth Vigors, Esq., M.P. for Carlow,received the original specimen of this bird as a British onefrom the Queens County, in Ireland, in August, 1822, andnamed it in honour of Colonel Sabine, the then chairman ofthe Zoological Society. It was shot near Portarlington, bythe Rev. Charles Doyne, on the 22nd. of August in thatyear. Another was shot in Ireland the end of November, orbeginning of December, 1827, on a heathy hill near Garvagh,in the county of Londonderry, the seat of Lord Garvagh,by Captain, afterwards General, Bonhan, then of the 10th.Hussars. Lord Garvagh has frequently seen others in thesame locality—one on the 12th. of January, 1853, and againafterwards; also in 1854. Mr. Thompson, in his Birds ofIreland, gives ten instances of its occurrence. On the 26th. of October, 1824, another, a female, waskilled on the banks of the Medway, near Roches
