note is: His picture standethaloft on the other Monument, this other being a very faireMonument richly guilded to his friend Alderman PeterHoughton, who died 1596, and on whose behalf Vernon paidlegacies of £400 to the Grocers Company and £600 to the fourRoyal hospitals. These monuments, which were on the north wall of thechancel, having perished in the Great Fire, the Court on July 3,1696, ordered that the Effigies of M1, Jn0, Vernon, deced., aworthy benefactor to this Company, be put up in the Church ofSnt. Michaell Cornhill neare the place where it formerly stood andthat the Wardens, Mr Heygate and M1, Bateman doe take care tosee the same performed. This monument, which has been movedfrom its original position, north of the Communion Table, intothe north aisle, bears the following inscription : 66 To the pious Memory of Mr. John Vernon, late a worthyMember of the Worshipful Company of Merchant 1 No date is filled in. The monument may have been erected by Vernon inhis lifetime. 70
