crawl. The smoke haintso bad. But in the moment that the door was burst in,the wind, rushing through, for an instant almostcleared the room of smoke, but in another filled itwith flame. The one instant was enough. In itthey both saw dimly, in the corner nearest them, the bed, on which the choking child had almostceased to cry. Jack seized the little one in his armsand rushed out. Henry retreated to the door andlooked back to be sure whether the room had otherinmates, but was at once driven out by the flame. The soldiers drew back to the edge of the clearingand laid the little one on the grass. Then theyturned to Jack and Henry. Burn ye. Hank ? Nope. Git scorched. Jack ? Singed my har a little mite, but nary burn. The child was also unhurt, though gasping forbreath. Asleep on the bed and covered with Mol-lies saddle shawl, he had escaped the notice of therebels in their hasty visit, and had awakened barelyin time to be rescued. What to do with the boy was the next question. IlicUOB^LiBRA
Text Appearing After Image:
The Rescue of Cub. Page 70. The Battle of Wild Cat Mountain 71 He was a lusty young fellow of three or four years. His father, they judged from the grave near by, wasdead. The mother — they had many and unfoundedconjectures. Those were the days of wild tales ofrebel atrocities ; and there were atrocities enough onboth sides, in all conscience. But in the heat ofthat day when they first saw blood, in the angerand hatred of battle, the theory that commendeditself to them was one that would have been in-stantly rejected after a few months of fighting, whichwas that the mother had been foully dealt with andgrossly murdered, and the body left with the livingchild to perish in the fire which they had kindledto conceal their brutal deed. They sent the boy to the hospital. Jack andHenry agreeing to see to him when the battle wasover. Jack an Hanks Cub, the soldiers lov-ingly dubbed him, in affection for the child and thefoster parents also ; for it was their fashion to dis-semble their love
