Tins most formidable enemy of the apple-grower is animportation from either Europe or America, and has longbeen known in those parts as one of the worst pestsaiFecting the apple. The large family of the Coccidce are, unfortunately, toowell known, the life-history of most of them being verysingular ; and if only for the purpose of stud3dng theirhabits with the view of endeavouring to find out someweak spot in their economy so as to be able to takeadvantage of it by preventative or remedial measures, thetime so devoted would, by the knowledge gained, beamply repaid. Mr. Maskell, whose valuable work on the Scale Insectsof New Zealand is so well known, tells us that themale of this species is unknown in New Zealand andEurope, and doubtful in America, so that although theMussel-scale of the apple is a well-mark
