(Plate XL) Characters.—Size small; fur close, thick, and woolly. Generalcolour clear grizzled grey; chin more or less blackish ; under-parts white or dirty yellow, with a median rusty-red patch onthe chest in adults. Ears long and narrow, much longer thanbroad, nearly naked inside, and near the tip externally. Feetwhite, grey, or brown. Tail thick, cylindrical, and bushy, withthe terminal half or two-thirds grey, the end black, and the ex-treme tip occasionally white; the naked inferior portion fromthree to six inches in length, and transversely wrinkled. Lengthof head and body about 18 inches ; of tail 11 inches. Distril)iition.—The whole of Australia, with the exception ofthe Cape York district. Variety.—The Tasmanian Phalanger (var. T. fuligiJiosus) is oflarger size and stouter and heavier build than the typical form,

The thick and bushy tail is almost entirelyblack. Length of head and body about 23 inches; of tail 15inches. Habits.—The Common Phalanger, which may be comparedin size with an ordinary Domestic Cat, is an inhabitant of thetallest trees of the Australian and Tasmanian forests, preferringgum-trees to all others, and selecting for its habitation thosewith a hollow trunk or arms, in the recesses of which it canpass the day securely wrapt in slumber. At night the Pha-langer leaves its lair to wander stealthily among the branches,upon the buds, fruits, and leaves of which it feeds. Occasion-ally these animals descend to the ground, perhaps in search ofwater ; and throughout these arboreal rambles they are muchassisted in climbing by their highly prehensile tail, which isalone amply sufficient to support the weight of th
