, andother dense vegetation, or among the thick mangroves, whoseroots are washed by each succeeding tide. The islands at themouth of the Hunter, particularly Mosquito and Ash Islands,are not unfrequently flooded to a great extent; yet it leapsthrough the shallow parts with apparent enjoyment, and evencrosses the river from one island to another. Enormousnumbers of this Wallaby are killed for the sake of their skins,which are extensively used in Canada for coats, while thelarger ones are manufactured into leather. The number ofskins annually imported into England ranges from about10,000 to 20,000; the value of each skin usually varying fromsixpence to one-and-ninepence, although over three shillingshas been obtained.
