In all the frescoes the landscape hasgreat beauty, a faithful portrait, with its rocks andcypresses, of the hills round Florence. They are themasterpiece of the painter, not only for their decorativesplendour, but for the fine draughtsmanship and com-position. They represent the apotheosis of the Medicifamily, which, however, with characteristic ostentation of humility, has includedonly one of its membersamong the kings, Piero,who commissioned them,not being even portrayed.As wall decorations they areunrivalled, for the grandeurand unity of the large com-position, the skilful paintingof the landscape, whichactually seems to stretchback on either side, and thegorgeous blaze of gold andcolour. Vasari mentionsthem without comment.(Vas. ii. 46.) The chapelis beautifully decorated.The roof is carved withdeep cofferings glowingwith gold and ultramarine. The paintings havesuffered much damage.
