The Long barrows contain both burntand unburnt remains in different localities, but in the Eoundbarrows not only do sepulchral vessels of pottery appear, Isut incases of cremation the ashes of the dead were deposited eitherin a hollow in the floor of the grave or in a cinerary urn. Again, ROUND BARROWS 55 the unburnt body was laid on one side, right or left indifferently,and directed towards any point of the compass, with the kneesalmost invariably doubled up to the chin and the hands often infront of the face, but in no uniform position. It was, however,observed on the Yorkshire Wolds that when the head pointedapproximately to the west, by far the larger number of bodieswere laid on the right side, whereas when the head was to theeast, the majority lay on the left side, the tendency being for theface to be set towards the mid-day sun. Apart from subsequent or secondary interments, there wereseveral instances on the Wolds of more than one body in a grave,
