CENTRAL DISTRICT AND $*0RTH AND WEST ENDS GUIDE TO BOSTON 19 Near the head of Milk Street, No. 19, and nearly oppositethe Old South Church, is the birthplace of Benjamin Franklin.The Old South Meeting-House, corner of Milk and Washing-ton streets, was built in 1729- A previous church on this sitewas built in 1670. On Milk Street, just behind the church,is the site of Governor Winthrops second mansion, in whichhe died. Otis, Warren and Hancock addressed the citizens from thepulpit of the Old South; Whitefield preached here; townmeetings were held in the Meeting-House in 1773, which ledup to the Boston Tea Party. Dr. Joseph Warren delivered aseries of orations on the Boston Massacre here three monthsbefore he was killed at Bunker Hill. The church was used asa riding-school by the British dragoons in 1775, during thesiege of Boston.
