Great Elm was 123 A GREAT YEAR sent to Haydock Park and took a little stake on the6th of October, and on the 7th Lord Glanely actuallywon twice, the Thursday Welter with Quantavis, theWhite Lodge Nursery with Little Jig, and on the 1 ithLorna Doon won at Wolverhampton. Willblendmade a third contribution at the Newmarket SecondOctober on the 14th of the month, and that ended therecord of the year, the record of success that is to say.It will be remembered by many readers that theHoughton Meeting of 1920 was abandoned in conse-quence of the Coal Strike, there having been noracing in England between the 16th of October andthe resumption at Newbury on the 5th of November.Lahloo, Sea Song, Grand Fleet and one or two othersran at Manchester, but without doing any good. 124

CHAPTER IV GRAND PARADE Names famous in Turf history appear as a matter ofcourse in the pedigrees of all the thoroughbred horsesof the day. But those from whom Grand Parade hasdescended strike one as peculiarly attractive andfascinating. Grand Parade was a son of Orby andGrand Geraldine, Orby by Orme out of Rhoda B., amare bred in the United States of America in 1895and imported in 1896, a daughter of Hanover, one ofthe best horses in the annals of trans-Atlantic sport.Of her it will suffice to add that she throws back toDoncaster on the dams side ; for her dam Margerinewas by Algerine out of Sweet Songstress, who was bythe Derby winner of 1873. We will run hastilythrough the descent of Grand Parade and comepresently to details of his ancestors. Orme, thegrandsire of Grand Parade, was a son of Ormondeand Angelica, the dam by Galopin out of St.Angela by King Tom. Ormonde was by Bend Orout of Lily Agnes by Macaroni, her dam PollyAgnes by The Cure. Bend Or was by Doncaster, 125 A GREAT Y
