to leave in ourhands until the close of the year, when it should bepresented to him in a good bond that will become asource of income. He is twenty-eight years old and itis time for him to begin in earnest about a fortune.Neither Gilder nor any of the younger men inthe place ever made a fortune or thought about it.They worked in a happy atmosphere of mutualrespect and devotion — they were interested ingreat things and in important movements. If Dr.Hollands idea had been carried out and two fifthsof their salaries had been held back for the purchaseof a good bond at the end of the year, perhapsthey would have saved more money, but familiesincreased, home life broadened, entertaining was apart of the job, using the money seemed more im-portant than putting it into bonds, and the youngerman who saved much out of his income was a rar-ity. It did not seem that there could ever be a rainierday. The young men had a chance to buy stockfrom time to time, always at a fair market price. ( 44 )
