Description
English:
A goat sacrifice, India, ca. 1906
Tinted lantern slide showing a group of men and women gathered around the sacrifice of a goat. The goat's head sits in a wooden rest, whilst its body lies a distance away on the ground. A bare chested man stands with a cleaver placed above a bucket. The sacrifice seems to take place in a stone courtyard. The goat would have been killed as part of a ceremony by Jhatka, decapitation by a single blow. Animal sacrifice is not a prescribed part of Hinduism, although it is practised in northern India by worshippers of the goddess Kali. This slide comes from a collection created by missionaries from Regions Beyond Missionary Union, an interdenominational Protestant evangelical mission working in northeast India (Bihar and Orissa) and Nepal.
