n goes down. Then everyone who can, goes out onthe Luneta, a very pretty drive alongside the City Park,and the barracks. The bands play in the park, and thewhole populace, as well as our soldiers, come out for alittle fresh air and recreation, and drive, walk or sit, untilabout eight p. m. when it is time to go home for dinner. We were at the Metropole Hotel, the best in the cityat this time, only been open about a month and has themerit of being clean, but the cooking is Spanish, and ifthere is any kind of cooking that is always bad without anyexception, it is the Spanish. The beds are bamboo frameswith a light cotton pad about two inches thick for amattress, and awfully hard; yet I was tired and could haveslept had it not been for the mosquitos, as I had arevolving fan overhead, which ran all night, and made alittle breeze.
