The Rani has been here for severalweeks but we came only three days ago, as the Rajah,who had been staying here, has gone out into thecountry for a few days. Perhaps you remember thephotograph of the tank which I brought home withme. It is a beautiful place. On the north are highhills well wooded which are fresh and green since therains, and on the summit of the highest hill is the fortand an old palace which looks very pretty from here.The arches of our open veranda we have had hung (246)

<3 to hi Distinguished Visitors with cloth so we are sheltered from the sun and yetget plenty of fresh air. Our food is cooked in anopen courtyard under a large Nim tree. All our serv-ants are with us so we are well looked after. I attend my dispensary every morning, which ishalf a mile distant and get back to my breakfast aboutten oclock. Our breakfast room is in a minaret justat the angle of two verandas ; it is an octagon withopen arches, and it stands out in the water; we havea view of the whole tank and masonry surrounding itand of the hills. At evening all the servants are sent away, the gatesare closed and the Rani comes out for a walk, and sitswith us for a while. It is lovely here at sunset; thehills are reflected in the water, and the sky is blue andclear with a few tinted clouds near the sun. I oftenwish for a painters brush, or rather that I had a giftfor painting and sketching. The change out herehas done us all good for we have been very sad forseveral days at the new
