The Agility of Body, and Refolution of Mind that are Agility ofneceffary to a Surgeon, are elegantly defcribed by Celfus: a A Surgeon, (fays Resolution he) ought to be in his full Vigour, to have a ftrong fteddy Hand, never given of Mind. to tremble, and to be as ready with his left Hand as his right; to have a quick, clear Sight, an intrepid Mind, void of all Tendernefs, fa as not to beat all moved by the Outcries of his Patient; to ufe no more Hafte than the Cafe re- quires, nor to cut lefs than is neceffary •, but he mould act in all refpefts as if he was entirely unaffected by his Patients Complaints. But at the fame time, Iwould have him behave with fuch Caution as to be guilty of no Aft of Rafhnefsor Cruelty, and very carefully avoid giving unneceffary Pain. XXXIX.
