he above described from a specimenin the collection of A. Mc. Leay, Esq. who received it from Berbice,by the name of Maroedi. A great singularity is observable in respect to the trachea, orwindpipe of this species, similar indeed to that of the Marail,* andParraqua Species, but far exceeding them in structure; for it descendsso low on the belly under the skin, as nearly to reach the vent, beforeit returns upwards, to pass over the clavicle into the cavity of thethorax; besides which, it has a double upwards on the lower part ofthe belly; it differs, too, in passing down on the right side of thebreast, and not on the left, as in the others. What end the aboveconstruction of parts is meant to answer, we are yet to learn ; nor is itcertain that both sexes have the trachea formed in the same manner. * Buffon confounds the Guan with the Marail, from which it differs in the internalstructure ; but this proof, now fully convincing, was not known at the time, when thatauthor wrote. pj. rxxiL.

General colour of the plumage moreor less inclining to black ; bill dusky, moderately straight, and verylittle curved towards the point; the cere, orbits, and top of the head,are white, the white reaching beyond the eye behind; head notcrested ; beneath the throat a wattle of a deep blue colour; the backinclines to red brown, spotted with black ; on the wing coverts agreat mixture of white ; belly black ; legs red, claws black.
