Here, in 1789, ayear of great scarcity, he met with asevere affliction, the loss of his houseand nearly all his provisions by a fire.Previous to this, he had been de-pending on his external morality forsalvation, considering a change asunnecessary. He now found that hecould not truly submit to the will ofGod, and betook himself to the seek-ing of his salvation in earnest.
