Summary
[edit]DescriptionA gall on ash keys - geograph.org.uk - 991490.jpg |
English: A gall on ash keys The brown mass shown here is a centimetre or so across, and is a plant gall, produced by the mite species Aceria fraxinivorus. It starts off green, but later darkens (as has happened here). This variety of ash gall is widespread and common.
It is growing on a bunch of "ash keys" (the name given to the fruit of the ash tree; the fruit is of a type known as a samara: papery and wing-like to aid dispersal by wind). The ash tree on which this gall occurred was standing next to a footpath that ascends to Kilpatrick Braes. |
