Title
A fragment of post medieval German stoneware dating to the 16th-17th century.
Description
English: A fragment of post medieval German stoneware dating to the 16th-17th century. The fragment is part of the body of the vessel. It is of a mid-light grey clay with an iron-rich salt glaze on the outer surface, producing a textured mottled brown effect. There is also a salt glaze on the inner surface with a pitted texture. The fragment is decorated with a series of arches with inscriptions running around the edge. The inscription reads [...]EV:SAMEN/BRAND[...]NBVR[...]. There is a column supporting the two arches which has an irregular capital that resembles a bunch of bananas. Above the column is a face, resembling a theatre mask, with scrolls descending to two beads. Standing in one archway is a man wearing a ruff and with a cross on the chest. There appears to be another figure in the other archway, but they are no longer visible due to damage.

No parallels for this example have been found, but Ruffs were in use from the mid 16th century and throughout the 17th century.

Dimensions: length: 63.17 mm; width: 33.87 mm; thickness: 5.43 mm; weight: 15.97g.
