Title
A fragment of copper alloy Roman brooch
Description
English: A fragment of copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, cf.Mackreth 2011, Plate 32, n. 1179, dating to AD 43-120.
The wings are C-shaped in cross section with a span of 31.1mm. An double-pierced lug at the centre of the head holds the axis bar in it lower peircing. The spring mechanism sits in the hollowed area of the wings and consists of six complete coils, with one end, broken, on the right side, the third coil extends to form the pin. These coils wind around the axis bar, the two end coils then extending into the cord which curves above the spring and through the upper piercing in the central lug. The upper bow survives to a length of 14.80 mm. It extends from the centre and top of the wings. The maximum thickness of the bow measures at 4.42 mm, the maximum width is 5.74 mm. The decoration on the bow consists on a swelling with a groove below, beyond which is the break. The lower bow, foot and catchplate are missing from the brooch. All breaks on the object are old.
