Title
a fragment of a post medieval clapper bell
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy bell, either a large spherical or rumbler bell or a clapper bell of post-medieval date, AD 1600 - 1800. The remaining portion consists of an integrally cast, oval suspension loop or handle with a circular perforation, and part of the domed top of the bell. The loop still has the casting seam round the edge and part of the sprue at the top, suggesting the bell was unfinished or mis-cast. There is no eviedence of a clapper or attachment for one, leading to the suggestion that this was part of a large spherical bell. The fragment has a dark grey patina, suggesting a high white metal content. It is 24mm long, 17.9mm wide and 31mm high. It weighs 15.62gm.

A more complete example of a similar clapper bell fragment can be found on the database at record number SUSS-000D32. Compare also <a title="View details for DENO-90F3B8" href="http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/485745">DENO-90F3B8</a>.
