Title
A fragment of a copper alloy brooch
Description
English: A fragment of an early medieval brooch, possibly of the square headed variety dating to the sixth or seventh centuries AD. The fragment is decorated with an anthropomorphic male face with long, gently curving eyebrows which join broad triangular nose. The nose has two incised transverse lines at its base. The eyes are large and almost lentoidal, full rounded cheeks, open oblong mouth, C-shaped ears, moustache and part of full beard on surviving side. On the reverse there is a ridge 4mm wide, parallel-sided. The fragment has a dark grey patina, possibly indicative of a high lead content. Slightly bent. The fragment has a length of 23mm, a width of 18mm, a thickness of 4mm and weighs 5.6g.
