Description
English: A fragment of a Medieval lead alloy Papal bulla of Pope Innocent (AD1130-1492). The obverse depicts the head of St Peter to the right and St Paul to the left; only the bust of St Peter remains on this fragment with the inscription [S PA S]PE above the head. SPA is an abbreviation of Sanctus Paulus for St Paul and SPE an abbreviation for Sanctus Petrus for St Peter. There is a beaded border around the head, representing the aureole (halo) and a there is a further pelleted border around the edge of the motif and inscription. The reverse has the inscription “IN[NO]/CEN[TIVS/PP[---]” there is an omega above the first ‘P’. This seal is from the Pope Innocent, PP is an abbreviation of Pastor Pastorum, Shepherd of the shepherds and then there should be in a number in Roman numerals indicated which Pope Innocent, however this section of the seal is missing. Pope Innocent II was Pope from 1130-1143 and Pope Innocent VIII was Pope from 1484-1492. The seal has broken along one of the cord holes.
