Title |
A fine example of a copper alloy Roman thistle brooch sometimes called a 'Rosette' dating 43 to 54AD. |
||
Description |
English: A fine example of a copper alloy Roman thistle brooch sometimes called a 'Rosette' dating 43 to 54AD. The brooch consists of a plate at the centre partially broken which spouts upwards in a short arched bow curving backwards at the top to support tubular wings which contains the spring which is complete with pin. Below the plate is a wide slightly curving fantail-shaped leg, ending bluntly at the foot with a terminal moulding, at the rear of which is attached the catchplate which is also complete. The arch of the top of the bow is ribbed and the bottom of the arch is engraved with a zig zag pattern. The patina is dark green. Thistle brooches must have been expensive types because manufacture must have been more time consuming than other types. The length is 38mm, the width is 18mm and the thickness is 20mm. |
