ult to account for the scarcity, whenit was also taken note of how unusually abundant the allied House-Martin was (as I have already mentioned). The only large colonymet with of Sand-Martins was at Auchenblae, in a sand and gravelpit which faced directly south. I obtained a photograph of this site, which was occupied by some forty pairs of the birds, along with theportrait of my friend Mr. J. Milne, whose house in Auchenblaeis close to the colony, but faces directly north. Warmth surelymade this locality favourable. Another small colony occupied another sand and gravel pit betweenRannoch and Struan, also facing the south; but gravel pits facing thenorth failed to show up a single Sand-Martin. It is curious to find thatsome birds prefer a northern aspect for their breeding places, whilstothers, as it were, seek the sunny side. Innumerable instances ofthis could be given. I will only instance one here—the screes andslopes befriended by the Snow-Bunting, at least so far as nests of that

BIRDS. Ill species and their haunts have been discovered in Scotland on ourmountains. I think it rather idle to go on insisting that tempera-tures have to do with the selection of nesting sites; or to go a littlefurther, that temperatures have to do with dispersal and distribution, and that altitudes of haunts of various species above sea-level affectthese species to quite an appreciable degree, in different latitudesand even in different localities. But later in the season of 1905 Mr. Wm. Evans found Sand-Martins abundant around the Killin district, so that apparently thecold spring and late cold summer, which remained almost Arctic incharacter up to late in June, in the central districts of Scotland andin Tay, only exercised a temporary check upon the migration, shortening, however, the period of the nesting season appreciably.
