A DIGEST OF METABOLISM EXPERIMENTS. No. 1 was made by Cramer in 1882 in connection with a study of the dietary of aso-called vegetarian. The subject was an official of high rank in the German civilservice. He was in good health and possessed of a great deal of physical endurance.He was not a strict vegetarian, for although vegetable food formed the greater partof his diet, milk and eggs were also consumed. His diet was a matter of choice andhad been followed for many years. Analyses of food, urine, and feces were made. The conclusion is reached that the dietary followed furnished the subject with suf-ficient nutriment, but if the animal food was omitted it would not do so. It isurged that a strictly vegetarian diet is not desirable because a large quantity of foodmust be consumed in order to obtain sufficient protein.
